They’re just not for everything.

Squarespace is a great tool for certain people starting out who need a website, such as someone looking for a portfolio website to showcase artwork, designs and things like that. For people in positions like that, the thing that makes Squarespace ideal is its simplicity. Its blog editor layouts are perfect for portfolios and perfect for those within design niches who don’t have any coding skills.

The purpose of these websites is to showcase their work, not do any major lifting of a brand or corporate website.Twenty or thirty years ago, when applying for a graphic design job, you would be required to lug a heavy portfolio around with you to interviews. Now, thanks to Squarespace, you can just show prospective employers your online CV.

For things as simple as that, heavily editable content management systems such as WordPress or Shopify, or custom builds, are overkill. They are simply not needed. But what makes Squarespace ideal for portfolios is exactly what, in my opinion, makes it the wrong choice for bigger brands who are trying to tell a story, perform marketing and SEO, and be seen as a heavy hitter online.

Things like Squarespace and Wix are a great first rung on the ladder for those who understand they need a website and they need to get online quick. But they’re not really the optimal way to tell people, “I’m interested in investing in my business by doing a proper brand focused website.” Think of it like serving Big Macs at a wedding reception. Great for a quick bite to eat on the go less so for a luxury celebration.

When the tool becomes the limitation

In my time working as a freelancer for an web design agency, I was asked a few times to build Squarespace websites, because that’s what the client wanted and as part of my job that’s what I was told to do. But having used the Squarespace environment for long enough, I made what I believe was the right decision going forward, which was to refuse to work with it ever again. The underlying reason was coming to the conclusion of just how difficult it is to design and develop a website with one hand tied behind your back.

As I evolved into working as a designer/developer for my own company I’ve stuck to my guns of never building anything with Squarespace ever again and in doing so I’ve had to turn down work on some projects that I would have loved to have been a part of because Squarespace was a client necessity.

Although I’ve lamented one particular project that got away, I don’t regret saying no for two reasons. I’ve learned through over a decade of building bespoke websites with custom code that when working within the Squarespace ethos it is truly impossible to escape its niche.

No matter how skilled you are, the platform leaves constraints that you can’t completely design your way out of and it’s there because of the block tools that make it so easy for non-coders to work with, but this outcome would have limited anywork I could have done for the client because I could never truly make them a bespoke website within the confines of Squarespace.

When the platform dictates the design

What frustrated me as a designer/developer was that everything was either set to be grid or flex, and breakpoints were set for a page at one point. But in real life, websites are not linear. Each element may have looked BETTER if it could have been flex to start with and then turned into a grid, while having complete control over breakpoints and the way everything behaves at different screen sizes.

It’s why, with things like Squarespace, you can end up with massive chunks of white space beside images because that’s the way the block editor is designed. If you can tweak the breakpoint or change how those elements behave, you can avoid it.

That’s the difference between being able to build what looks right and having to build what the platform allows you to build and its also why showcasing a portfolio with matching images doesnt fall foul of the limitations in the same way as a brand or corporate website would.

The client shouldn’t have to be the developer

I also understand how things like Squarespace, Wix or Weebly can appear easy for some clients compared to daunting CMS’ like WordPress, Shopify or a custom build. Especially if the client has no coding knowledge to work with. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. At least that’s the way that I try to build all my websites, by steering away from page builders. What I try to do with custom builds is to take the danger out of things like page builders and make it as easy as possible.

When a client is editing their own site and they have to make changes in the page builder, it’s so much more likely that they’ll accidentally click or drag something that will mess up the entire layout. Then they can’t fix it, they save it, and the developer struggles to put the pieces back together when contacted. There’s a number of ways this can go wrong, they want to change some text and assign any font so that it doesn’t match, or they want to change something to their header colour orange and choose something from a dropdown that doesn’t match.

I’m not saying WordPress is the greatest and it’s the only CMS you should ever use, no. But I do believe that it along with Shopify are definitely a step up over things like Squarespace. The reason I use it is that the CMS is fairly well known by my clients in one way or another, and if not, there are a lot of tutorials on it, which makes it easier than building a headless CMS and having to have the client learn to use that.

And while I understand that the WordPress ecosystem gets a bad rap for being a bit clunky sometimes, I try to build my own custom functions into the build or use my own light weight plugins wherever possible to add extra functionality and remove unnecessary bloat. The idea isn’t to give the client a complicated website to manage. It’s to give them a website that is capable of doing what it needs to do while keeping the things they can change simple.

You Should Own Your Website or E-Commerce Store Not Lease It

You will never own your Squarespace store. It belongs to Squarespace; you’re only leasing it. If they decide they don’t like what you’re selling, bye. Whereas with a custom build or WordPress, you own everything. You’re unhappy with your hosting provider? Cool, move it elsewhere. Need the domain changed? Cool, move that too.

I’ve had to do both these things with multiple clients and, thankfully, it was easy, the hardest part was having to wait a couple of hours for propogation (in non tech terms it means for the postman to learn you’ve moved from 1A to 3C in the apartment block). Whereas with Squarespace I once had a client through the same agency who had bought the domain for her business and I was in the process of building out the website. Halfway though the process this client decided to change the business name which meant changing the domain and resulted in them having to buy a second Squarespace subscription. These are the sorts of things you don’t necessarily think about when you’re just trying to get a website online.

Choosing the right tool for the job

There is nothing wrong with starting out with Squarespace. If you’re a designer looking to showcase your work, an artist who needs somewhere to display your portfolio, or a small business that simply needs to get online, it can be a perfectly good solution. The problem comes when the website needs to become more than that. A bigger brand needs to be able to tell a story, market itself, be found through SEO, sell, generate enquiries and give people confidence that there is a serious business behind what they’re looking at.

That’s when the limitations of the platform start to matter. And this is where I think there is a difference between having a website and investing in having a website. Showing you’re a serious brand shows that you’re invested in your business. You’re here for the long haul and won’t be disappearing anytime soon. It shows you want to grow, tell and sell, rather than just show.

Squarespace is a great tool for certain people starting out who need a website, such as someone looking for a portfolio website to showcase artwork, designs and things like that.
