Project Overview
Experience Irish Whiskey is one of Ireland’s leading independent whiskey tasting experiences, offering fully guided whiskey tastings, walking tours and masterclasses. In 2022, the owner Derek King contacted me about building a website for this new business venture. He wanted a small, simple and easy to maintain website that would allow him to showcase his three different whiskey offerings while taking bookings and enquiries through the website.
As Experience Irish Whiskey grew from a small startup business into a recognised whiskey experience provider, the demands placed on the website also began to grow. The business expanded from offering three whiskey tasting options in Dublin to multiple experiences across the country, while also introducing tours and masterclasses.
This expansion, along with plans for future growth, led to the decision to redesign the website in 2026. I served as the lead designer and developer for the redesign project and continue to support Experience Irish Whiskey through ongoing maintenance.
Project Challenge
- Create a flexible website structure capable of supporting multiple new experiences.
- Improve the way tours, tastings and masterclasses were presented and categorised.
- Build a more efficient system for creating and managing new pages and SEO focused landing pages.
- Integrate new booking requirements including tiered pricing options.
Web Design & Development
The new website features a bespoke WordPress theme and was rebuilt using custom fields, replacing the previous page-builder approach used on the initial build. This allowed each new experience, tour and masterclass to be created using a consistent framework that could scale with the business, while still allowing each page to have its own unique content and design elements. This also ensured the pages remained consistent, making it easier for visitors to find the experience they were looking for.
Experience Categorisation
As the original website was designed around showcasing three whiskey tastings, the structure reflected the needs of the business at that time. However, as new categories such as tours and masterclasses were introduced, the website needed a clearer way to organise these experiences. With the rebuild, all experiences are now separated into dedicated categories, allowing tours, masterclasses and tastings to be grouped together and making it easier for visitors to find what they are looking for.
Booking Integration
As Experience Irish Whiskey continues to expand it has moved into the private group market for whiskey experiences in addition to the public market. This meant that the booking structure needed to be updated. In addition to maintaining the option to purchase spots at public whiskey experiences, an independent tiered pricing structure was introduced to cater for larger groups. This new pricing structure meant a new booking system needed to be setup on the website, which would allow for both of these options and also allow for enquiries to made in the case of bespoke experiences.
Interactive Walking Tour
On the Dublin Walking Tour page, I introduced a side scrolling element as a unique way to showcase all the stops on the enchanting whiskey walk through Dublin’s Liberties highlighting the pubs and sights seen along the way.
